PROTECTING THE TAXPAYERS
While most of our citizens have had to tighten their belts and cut their household budgets, big-spending politicians have forgotten how to say “No!” to the lobbyists and special interests that come to the state with their hands out. Enough is enough. I pledge that I will always stand up for Arizona’s taxpayers and re-focus our efforts on preserving vital programs, while getting our state government back to doing only those things that it is constitutionally obligated to do. Instead of continued borrowing, we must cut spending and balance our budget. For my work at the state capitol, I have been named “Friend of the Taxpayer” or "Champion of the Taxpayer" by Americans for Prosperity every year in office. I am proud to have been a part of passing Arizona’s 2011 budget. This was our state’s first truly balanced budget in half a decade and it was accomplished with no gimmicks, no rollovers, and no borrowing! Thankfully we have gone from multi-billion dollars in deficits to a $600 million dollar surplus, finally putting our state back on sound financial footing.
SANCTITY OF LIFE
The Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. These words have great meaning to me. After learning that abortion overwhelmingly targets both baby girls and minorities, I was proud to sponsor the 2010 Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act (PRENDA). It is now illegal in Arizona to abort a child for purposes of sex-selection or to abort a child because of his or her race. This law will lessen the number of abortions in our state. I believe that all life is precious and I am proud to be endorsed by Arizona Right To Life. As your legislator, I will be a tireless advocate for the unborn, the elderly and the infirm.
PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS
I will continue to fight to protect private property rights, to eliminate burdensome regulations and to better manage our public lands. I was proud to support Proposition 207 (Private Property Rights Protection Act), a 2007 effort to protect private property rights from the abuse of eminent domain laws.
FAMILY AND TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE
Families and traditional marriage benefit our society. I firmly believe that the institution of marriage should be protected, and that marriage is defined as one man and one woman. The decisions I make as a member of the House of Representatives will always be done with the best interests of families and children in mind. Beyond social policy, I also work to strengthen families by promoting family-friendly improvements in our tax code, and by working for a stronger economy and better paying jobs. If you care about families you must also work to help with the financial stresses that place such great burdens on them.
Whether your primary concern is national security, wasteful spending, education, healthcare, or our criminal justice system, the most important thing we can do is to secure our borders. The cost of illegal immigration in Arizona is nearly 2 billion dollars a year, and you, the taxpayer, are paying the bill. We must eliminate “sanctuary city” policies that encourage people to cross our borders illegally, and we must ensure that only those legally eligible are receiving government benefits and assistance. I truly believe that border security equals national security. We live in a dangerous era where men with evil ideologies seek to destroy our way of life. Terrorism is a very real threat, and our porous border provides easy access to criminals who would seek to do us harm. A border secured using both technology and manpower would also help to stop the flow of weapons and drugs, as well as end human trafficking.
Our federal government’s primary responsibility is to defend the security of our nation, and that requires a military that is second to none. I strongly support our men and women in the armed forces and the veterans who have bravely served our nation. I am proud to represent Luke Air Force Base and look forward to representing the men and women of the Marine Corps Air Station and the Yuma Proving Ground. Luke Air Force Base supports more than 70,000 members and retirees and employs over 6,400 Arizonans. The Yuma Proving Ground is the largest employer in Yuma County and is the largest consumer of local goods and services. In addition to the obvious benefit to our national security, these military installations have an incredibly positive economic impact on Arizona, totaling in the billions. I am proud to have spoken alongside Congressman Trent Franks in favor of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter coming to Luke AFB and will continue to voice my support for our military personnel and their families.
I strongly support the Second Amendment to the Constitution and have a 100% voting record in favor of this fundamental right. Our founding fathers understood the importance of a constitutional right to bear arms and I share their belief that this right should not be infringed upon by politicians or special interest groups. I am proud to have been endorsed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Arizona Civil Defense League (AZCDL), the state’s pre-eminent Second Amendment advocacy group.
Having been a teacher and as a youth pastor, I firmly believe that parents know best and should have the freedom to decide what kind of education they want for their children. Unfortunately, in too many cases our public school system is failing our children. Whether it is a lack of true competition, or because of waste in a system that spends less than 60% of every dollar in the classroom, we must fix this problem. We are blessed in Arizona to have many options for parents including tax credit programs, open-enrollment, homeschooling, charter schools and Empowerment Scholarship Accounts. I will continue to fight the politicians and their bureaucratic allies who put unions and administrators ahead of students. In addition, we need to better support our teachers, by rewarding good teachers with merit bonuses, and by creating alternate pathways to get highly educated professionals into the classroom, particularly in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. And let’s start treating our educators like the true professionals they are.
Government’s first responsibility is to provide for the safety of its citizens. Safe neighborhoods make for a much better quality of life for Arizona’s families and as such, I will always support giving law enforcement the tools they need to protect us. I believe strongly in mandatory sentencing laws with stiff penalties to prevent violent criminals and child predators from being released back into our neighborhoods.
Whether it is the quality of our air and water, utility generation, or issues that relate to growth, dust and pollution, we must find a reasonable balance. We must protect our environment by encouraging free-market ideas and solutions, reserving government regulation only for the most desperate of situations.
IMPROVED TRANSPORTATION & INFRASTRUCTURE
I have always thought that getting stuck in rush hour was nothing more than a tax on our time. Time we could be spending earning a living or being with our families. I have fought and will always fight to ensure that we get our fair share of transportation dollars. We pay our fair share of taxes and deserve equal treatment when it comes to providing proper infrastructure for our cities and towns.
